Lissy Trullie - Self-Taught Learner

Single Review by Lauren Mayberry | 07 Jun 2009
Single title: Self-Taught Learner
Artist: Lissy Trullie
Label: Wichita Recordings
Release date: 29 June

Lissy Trullie is the stage name of former model Lizzie McChesney, the face of Chloë Sevigny’s clothing line. As a front woman and vocalist, the 25 year old is neither fiery nor flamboyant, the EP mainly entailing upbeat pop-rock with very little by way of pretensions. The tracks are short and sweet, most lyrics obviously concerning boy-girl loving.

Single Boy Boy is a standout, as is the title track Self-Taught Learner, the most vocally interesting of the EP. There are jangly guitars and splashes of Kate Nash keyboards throughout, but this release is not theatrical or pompous. Albeit slightly repetitive at points, the EP has a confident, competent and honest feel, making it seem a bit rash to lump Lissy Trullie in with the other androgynous, fashion-conscious females du jour just yet.
