Japanese Voyeurs - That Love Sound/Blush

Single Review by Euan Ferguson | 25 Jan 2010
Single title: That Love Sound/Blush
Artist: Japanese Voyeurs
Label: Slimeball Records
Release date: 8 Feb

Who remembers the 90s? Japanese Voyeurs certainly do, or if they’re not old enough, they’ve been busily swotting up on their big brother’s old CD collection. You have to admire their enthusiasm, and also their devotion to detail – the pounding drums and muddy, angry riffs could have been originally made by Nirvana, Swervedriver or a younger Josh Homme, while singer Romily Alice’s yelping vocals bring back fond memories of the Riot Grrrl movement, back when feminism was fun. It’s her unhinged caterwauling (I mean that in a good way) that elevates this double A-side from boring parody to energetic tribute. [Euan Ferguson]
