Emika - Drop the Other

4/5 stars

Drop the Other is how Nico might have sounded had she been wearing a helmet in 1988 and lived to remain at the avant garde of the Berlin scene. It’s a dark and breathy take on R&B in an atmospheric, broken-up, dubby frame – but the real beauty lies in Scuba’s ‘Vulpine’ remix – not the King Britt Scuba, but a dubstep producer from London. It takes the ambiguous vocal and adds Burial-style disembodied, clicky beats, monumental bass and a spooky pallor to the whole affair. An irresistible combination of urban trip hop, suburban dubstep and unknowable subterranean romance.[Euan Ferguson]
