Laurent Garnier - Pay TV

3/5 stars
Single review by Ray Philp.
Published 20 August 2009

Laurent Garnier's latest single is best described as a précis of the Parisian DJ's mercurial, if occasionally erratic, career to date. His eclectic approach to techno has earned him a reputation for avant-garde prescience, and Pay TV confirms as much – the air of menacing sleaze it carries by way of the offbeat warbling synths and orgiastic vocals doesn't entirely betray Garnier’s sporadic predilection to over-indulgence, exhibited here by Arnaud Rippert’s excessive percussive contribution. It’s this insistence on inclusivity that lets Pay TV down, but Garnier gets a pass for venturing outwith his comfort zone yet again to such intriguing effect.
