Jimi Tenor & Kabu Kabu - Mystery Spot / Black January
Published 23 October 2008
For a maverick known for working on the fringe of several music genres (including techno, jazz, and industrial rock), and building his own instruments from scrap metal and then destroying them on stage, Finland's Jimi Tenor has recorded two surprisingly straightforward funk tracks with West African rhythm band Kabu Kabu. These unashamed floor fillers wouldn't seem out of place in a trendy bar full of young professionals on a Friday night. Still, Tenor and Kabu Kabu aren't necessarily at fault, given that the realities of globalisation, the internet, and cultural hybridism have allowed the burgeoning world music scene to find its market amongst the bohemian middle-classes.
