Yusaf Azak - Light Procession EP

Dreamy yet messy second effort from promising Scottish artist

Single Review by Ryan Drever | 24 Nov 2008
Single title: Light Procession EP
Artist: Yusaf Azak
Label: Self released
Release date: 24 Nov

This - the second EP from Aberdeen-born artist Yusuf Azak - is a smorgasbord. Strings, guitars, hushed vocals, and faint percussion all swell into each other like crashing waves. However, occasional flurries of brilliance are allowed to filter through, equating to a short collection of tracks that is both eccentric and often delicately original. There are elements of 60s psych rock here - particularly in opener 19.19 and Yusaf Azakeponymous Light Procession - and frequent hints at the dreamy lull of Elliot Smith. Although there's an inescapable lack of overall focus on show, it would be a safe bet to say that we haven't heard the best from Yusuf Azak just yet. Quite exciting indeed. [Ryan Drever]
