The Scottish Enlightenment - Pascal EP

Strong return EP from some of Scotland's favourite philosophers

Single Review by Lauren Mayberry | 10 May 2010
Single title: Pascal
Artist: The Scottish Enlightenment
Label: Armellodie
Release date: 10 May

For those concerned that The Scottish Enlightenment had fallen off the map, this latest EP will is a welcome return and right on form. With sparse, understated arrangements and intelligent lyrics which somehow sidestep ‘try hard’ territory, Pascal sets the tone of the quartet’s five-track release.

Effects and synthesised sounds add dreamy warmth and weight to what could be Explosions In The Sky guitars, the occasional piano sparkle and brooding yet endearing vocals. Released by eclectic new label Armellodie (home to Le Reno Amps, Cuddly Shark and Super Adventure Club),  it looks like the outfit are back on track. Breathe a sigh of relief if you’ve been waiting, the promise of a new LP is in the post. [Lauren Mayberry]
