Fis – Iterations EP

Single Review by Bram E. Gieben | 24 May 2014
Single title: Iterations EP
Artist: Fis
Label: Tri-Angle
Release date: 13 May

New Zealand producer Fis moves even further away from the drum and bass genre that birthed him – since he signed to Tri-Angle, he has been exploring far stranger sonic realms. Like Preparations, the four tracks of Iterations are laced with crunchy static; processed, lurching bass; and the kind of off-kilter rhythms more usually found in the sonic sculpture of artists like Onehotrix Point Never.

The title track floats by in a wash of white noise, muted synths and crackling, degraded drum hits, but by the time the rumbling, high-speed bass of Womb Dream kicks in, we're in altogether more propulsive territory. Fever / Sweat's washed-out rhythmic palette evokes destruction and industrial, urban decay; while Her Third Eye (Rain) revels in the kind of textured static and shuffling half-step towards which Burial has been moving on recent tracks.
