With The Horrors, frontman Faris Badwan has already displayed an admirable ambition to grow and diversify. Cat’s Eyes (a teaming up with soprano Rachel Zeffira) is a cast-iron example of this statement of intent. Originally conceived of as a tribute to the girl groups of the 60s, the EP is a richly textured paean to orchestral, melodic pop.

On opener Cat’s Eyes and Sunshine Girls, the duo successfully channel the aggressive yet melodic rock of the B-52s boy-girl dynamic. Swirly, layered Best Person I know, and Love You Anyway, a Bacharach-esque piano ballad, showcase Zeffira’s malleable, enticingly warm vocal, with the former only being let down by the excessively elementary nature of the lyric (You’re the best person I know, it’s true + All the best times are with you = boke). A hugely encouraging foretaste of the full-length release due in April.

Debut album Cat's Eyes is released on 11 Apr via Polydor

Cat's Eyes play St Andrew's In The Square, Glasgow on 15 Mar
