Yppah - They Know What Ghosts Know

A sun-blistered, slow-burning soundtrack for the summer.

Album Review by Paul Neeson | 05 May 2009
Album title: They Know What Ghosts Know
Artist: Yppah
Label: Ninja Tune
Release date: 18 May

The fact that Joe Corrales Jr.’s sophomore release captures both the wintry hip-hop instrumentals of Aim and the growling grunge of Earth in the same breath is testament to both the eclecticism of his own musical history, and the ever-embracing ethos of label Ninja Tunes. Following closely behind David Holmes' 2008 release The Holy Pictures, Corrales likewise proves that indie ethics can sit soundly beside the production-focused intentions of those favouring laptops and samplers. Had he taken things one step further by introducing vocals over such headline tracks such as The Tingling and Gumball Machine Weekend, then we may well have had a heavyweight contender for 2009 on our hands, such is the pop prowess which bubbles under the surface here. As it stands, however, They Know What Ghosts Know, still remains a sun-blistered, slow-burning soundtrack for the summer.
