Young People - 'All At Once' [Too Pure]

a room with muddy guitars and Katie Eastburn's brownbottle croon

Album Review by Sean Michaels | 17 Mar 2006
Album title: All At Once
Artist: Young People
Label: Too Pure
There's something exceedingly swinging about All At Once. Even when the Young People are at their bare bluesiest, just a room with muddy guitars and Katie Eastburn's brownbottle croon, we stay a long way from Cat Power melancholia. While you can't quite dance to The Clock, I can imagine you TRYING. Leaning into the Pink Panther strut of the piano, rolling with the stops and starts, catching the eye of the man with the Manhattan in his hand. It's a strange musical terrain, somewhere on the pebbled ground between Sons & Daughters and Vincent Gallo, but if everything lived up to the record's high points – ice-cool Your Grave, blur - and burbling Reapers, - there would be no keeping me away. I'd bring my tent, my gin, and watch the mirrorball spin. [Sean Michaels]
