Album Review by Ian Crichton | 24 Sep 2009
Album title: Wojtek Godzisz
Artist: Wojtek Godzisz
Label: Tigertrap Records
Release date: 5 Oct

Wojtek Godzisz’s voice is a curious one – at times it’s gravely with rock-and-roll abandon, at others he’s crooning like Badly Drawn Boy or a (much) less wordy Frank Turner. The wildly contrasting styles are not so difficult to get your head round once you learn he used to play bass with teenage Melody Maker [and Kerrang! - ed] cover stars Symposium. The range is pleasant to listen to; it’s the songs behind it that often fall flat. After a satisfyingly Arcade Fire-esque sing-along opening, the songs gently recline into the background. It’s all so innocuous and unassuming, there’s a chance you won’t sit up and take notice again until the fourth track, The Book of the Law, which packs a decent psych rock riff and soaring chorus. From then on, Wojtek's amorphous indie pop-isms ring hollow, lacking that certain edge that every singer/songwriter needs if they're to make a lasting impression.
