VA - The Glasgow School Of Art Goes Pop

Album Review by Chris Buckle | 17 Dec 2008
Album title: The Glasgow School Of Art Goes Pop
Artist: Various
Label: Art Goes Pop
Release date: Out Now

From Orange Juice to Belle and Sebastian, Glasgow’s pop pedigree is widely celebrated, but the city won't go resting on its laurels. Leeds label Art Goes Pop have collected 23 of the most exciting acts plying their wares up and down Sauchiehall Street, from rising stars We Were Promised Jetpacks and Isosceles, to more niche delights like Plaaydoh with their lo-fi Bis-isms, or the Fall-inspired clatter of Gummy Stumps. Not everything impresses – Fangs evoke Nathan Barley’s piss-take Terrorists Are Gay! – but otherwise most guitar-based tastes are catered for. Rock 'n' roll? Hidden Masters have it covered. Something spikier? Triple School will blow your socks off. Bit too loud? Zoe Van Goey might prompt a tear with their gently sung gap year romance. Chances are, an act from this compilation will be playing in town as you read this. Go and support them. And discover a candidate for volume two while you’re at it. [Chris Buckle]
