V/A - SK 200

Album Review by Colin Chapman | 22 Nov 2008
Album title: SK 200 - Compiled By Jazzanova
Artist: Various
Label: Sonar Kollektiv
Release date: Dec 2008

Compiled by Germany’s Jazzanova, SK 200 is a compilation that celebrates the 200th release on their Sonar Kollektiv label; no mean feat for an indie in these current times. Diverting from the traditional Best Of format, the trio have chosen tracks almost exclusively from the last year to celebrate their imprint’s decade long existence. However, by doing this they’ve highlighted its true diversity - SK 200 provides an ideal snapshot by covering the full range of Sonar Kollektiv’s stylistic elements: soul, jazz, house, folk, house, pop, Latin and more. With the quality so high throughout its hard to pick stand-out tracks and perhaps better to pick a sample that illustrate the broad musical sweep of the label - Christian Prommer’s Drumlesson’s jazz-reworking of Around The World, the slo-mo operatic house of Roland Appel, soulful dub-reggae from New Zealand’s Black Seeds, Benny Sings’ quirky hip-pop, or the beautiful folk vocals of Clara Hill.
