V/A - Recon-naissance: The Live Sessions

Album Review by Josh Coppersmith-Heaven | 15 Jun 2008
Album title: Recon-naissance: The Live Sessions
Artist: V/A
Label: Recon-naissance Records
Release date: Out Now

In Recon-naissance's compilation, there's a plethora of semi-familiar local acts, from that mad samba band you heard at The Wickerman, to that sultry French songstress that caught your ear in a West End bar. The Live Sessions brings together a wide range of live music born, raised and played in Glasgow. Demonstrating the diversity of Glaswegian music, there's a Johnny Cash cover from The Fortunate Sons, an electro/crunk track with a hot bass line from Soom T, and a reggae offering from Das Contras. Unsurprisingly, all the performances are live, and although the recording quality is generally consistent, the bands aren't always completely tight. However, the essence of performance is captured, strange banter and audience sing-alongs included. The Live Sessions is an upbeat, energetic, and colourful compilation that should make Glaswegians grin to know what musical delights lie on their doorstep.

Available from Glasgow record shops, Amazon.co.uk, or the website, for £7.
