The sophomore album from The Olympic Symphonium, a trio of multi-instrumentalists from New Brunswick, is certainly intimate. With no two songs alike and no instrument overshadowing any another, the ten tracks are gentle, personal pop. From short instrumental opener You Win Some, You Lose Some, to the country lament and sparse electric guitars of Dead Man’s Inn, the sound is organic and careful. Tight harmonies and subtly sad lyrics complement the soundscapes, exemplified on single Intentions Alone - “I don’t intend to raise my glass alone, and I don’t intend to break my bones alone” - with a hint of Lambchop. Side By Side is a standout track, with a deeper and initially less palatable vocalist, building throughout to a surge of Cat Power-esque backing vocals and satisfying round singing. Coming in neatly at just under 40 minutes, More In Sorrow Than In Anger is at points hypnotic, and at all times skillfully crafted folk.
