The Morning After Girls – Alone

Album Review by David Bowes | 09 Mar 2011
Album title: Alone
Artist: The Morning After Girls
Label: Xemu
Release date: 28 March

Saying that The Morning After Girls sound a bit like Radiohead once did would be a fair comparison to make, but then again they also sound like Ride, The Lightning Seeds and any number of mid-90s indie bands with a substantial amount of Beatles records on their shelves. In their defence, they make it all too clear that this was precisely what they wanted to convey, a hefty dollop of psychedelia laid over liberal chunks of shoegaze, all wrapped in the fluffy tortilla of nostalgia.

Alone isn’t unlikable in the least, with its melodies all being suitably absorbing while vocalist Martin B Sleeman is an invaluable asset to the band, bringing a dreamy air to even the most raucous of tunes. On top of this is Alan Moulder’s stellar production work, making the most of an abundance of talent (and sustain) to drive what could have been an uninspired venture into the wanting headphones of tie-dye adorning diehards.
