The Limiñanas – Costa Blanca

Album Review by Will Fitzpatrick | 21 Nov 2013
Album title: Costa Blanca
Artist: The Limiñanas
Label: Trouble In Mind
Release date: 2 Dec

Despite their origins under the warm sun of southern France, The Limiñanas’ music arrives shivering with sang-froid; a sense of louche detachment permanently embedded in their mesmeric grooves. Take the deadpan Votre Coté Yéyé M'Emmerde – knowingly and addictively kitsch, radiating an urgency that somehow manages to sound like The Velvet Underground copped their best poses from Stereolab rather than the other way round.

Elsewhere, BB reduces the  primal urges of yer favourite 60s garage floorshakers to a skeletal pulse without losing one iota of foot-stomping compulsion, before the heroically impassive Liverpool drops incrementally-savage guitar freakouts onto a taut drone. But rather than relying on individual highlights, Costa Blanca’s dedication to minimalism creates an overarching sense of colour and texture, with the gaps filled in by subtle flourishes. Fancy lighting up a Gauloise and surveying the world coolly behind a pair of dark glasses? Here’s your essential soundtrack. [Will Fitzpatrick]
