It’s truly amazing that after the however many years that music in its many forms has existed, artists can continue to evolve sound, surprise the listener and sound fresh. So here’s the antithesis, The Explorers Club. Even the cover of this CD shouts retro, and when the first track sounds exactly like The Beach Boys, it hardly comes as a shock. And it continues its tiresome weave down memory lane, admittedly in a very authentic fashion; Brian Wilson would be proud. Or calling his lawyer. Tapping the past is nigh on impossible to avoid, and some bands do it deftly, giving a nod to varying degrees, while also adding something. However, what TEC are peddling was done to death in the 1960s by greater people. If you want a dose of meticulously produced So’Cal sunshine pop, it’s right here, but if you want something new and interesting don’t expect much from this retread.
