The Draytones - Up In My Head

When all the pieces work, The Draytones show flashes of brilliance

Album title: Up In My Head
Artist: The Draytones
Label: 1965
It's incredibly fitting that Up In My Head is being released through 1965 Records, as this LP's garage-born psychedelia could barely owe more to the mid-1960s. It is unnecessary to see The Draytones to determine that they all have matching mop tops: their 1960s fetishism might even eclipse that of The La's. As High As I Can Get mimics Revolver-era Beatles to a T, with its Harrison-esqe lead guitar and singer Gabriel Boccazzi's John Lennon impression. Summer's Arrived could easily be on the Nuggets Box set of forgotten garage gems with its copious use of tambourine, church organ and gorgeous sun-washed harmonies. Not every track is a success - Don't Talk to Me and Throwing Stones fall a bit flat - but when all the pieces work, The Draytones show flashes of brilliance with their brand of unapologetic pop, and realise their singing '60s dreams.
