Quick on the heels of Acoustic Ladyland, The Discordian Trio bring jazz kicking and squeaking into the 21st century. With their line-up spanning mathcore and electro alumni, it’s no surprise to hear prog-fusion work outs like Sir Loin and Fourth Mansions, in which the legacy of Soft Machine and The Mahavishnu Orchestra is updated for a post-Mogwai world. That said, there’s much more on offer than modern day jazz rock. A particular stand-out is Be Seeing You, which sounds like Albert Ayler gobbing over elevator-jazz in disgust. Elsewhere, The Tombs is a séance that summons the spirit of Zoot Allures-era Zappa, whereas Life is a Near Death Experience bursts into palm-muted chuggery so suddenly, it’s as if the band whipped off their berets to cackle “Ha-ha-ha! We’ve actually been Metallica all along!”. This is a promising debut, and one which gets the difficult balance between structure and improvisation just right.
