Teen Men – Teen Men

Album Review by Andrew Gordon | 01 Jul 2015
Album title: Teen Men
Artist: Teen Men
Label: Bar None
Release date: 17 July

Teen Men should be easy to write off as mere zeitgeist imitators: spikey muted guitar, afropop percussion, a lush production complete with what sounds like harpsichord flourishes... Yes, Vampire Weekend are all over this record but if anything the likeness speaks to the Delaware band’s quality. Singer Nick Krill is a comparable match for Weekend’s Koenig, his words flowing with a sumptuous ease and efficiency. His lyrics, though simple, can be plenty pointed – why not stay a teen man when the alternative is “a five day march forever repeating”?

Also impressive is the band's attention to detail, their familiar brand of indie pop saturated with imaginative sounds and gorgeous textures that coalesce in some standout moments: Catherine Maloney’s wispy, string-accompanied vocal entry on Fall Out Tree is like sunshine from behind a cloud. It’s no game changer and the first half’s a little weak, but Teen Men is an otherwise promising, thoroughly likeable debut. [Andrew Gordon]
