Our Last Night - The Ghosts Among Us

Go on, give yourself a treat and feel the pain of being 15 again

Album title: The Ghosts Among Us
Artist: Our Last Night
Label: Epitaph
As an out and proud metal fan, the present swathe of emo-core is a treat, and this is another album of virtuoso brutality played with all the subtlety of a face-plant into concrete. Regardless of anyone's prejudices against metal / hardcore, hot-damn these boys can play. Our Last Night are produced by Steve Evetts, who has worked with Dillinger Escape Plan, and while there are hints of DEP in this New Hampshire quintet's music, the angular convulsions of their sound are not as severe. They strike a fine balance between emotion and chugging riff, similar to the likes of Enter Shikari, and on occasion veering closer to At The Drive-In: all spiked guitar hooks and vocal acrobatics. They suffer slightly from facsimile US emo-vocals and lyrics, so much so that The Ghosts Among Us can at times feel like an angst-athon. Go on, give yourself a treat and feel the pain of being 15 again. [Matt Gollock]
