Miguel Baptista Benedict – Super(b)-Child-Ran

Album Review by Bram E. Gieben | 18 Feb 2013
Album title: Super(b)-Child-Ran
Artist: Miguel Baptista Benedict
Label: Brainfeeder
Release date: 18 Feb

Less an album and more of a compilation, this collection of cut-ups and collages from experimental producer Miguel Baptista Benedict was selected by Brainfeeder boss Flying Lotus from a series of six albums previously released by the LA-based artist. A dedicated practitioner of cut-and-paste techniques, Benedict uses samples and found sounds to construct his murky, claustrophobic, often scarily beautiful collages of noise and melody. Distortion and tape static give way to delicately plucked guitar, muted drums and whispered, ethereal vocals.

Electronic squelches, clicks and whirs pick out a rhythmic line through washes of feedback and looped analogue drums. It's one of the more far-out, experimental releases to come from the Brainfeeder stable, with less pop appeal than the likes of Lapalux or FlyLo himself, but the layered, intricate, abstract structures are a perfect fit for the masters of the LA beat scene – a great introduction to a fecund new talent, Super(b)-Child-Ran serves as a compelling introduction to a promising new signing for the label.
