Merchandise - A Corpse Wired For Sound

Album Review by Chris Ogden | 30 Sep 2016
Album title: A Corpse Wired For Sound
Artist: Merchandise
Label: 4AD
Release date: 23 Sep

On new record A Corpse Wired For Sound the Florida post punks revert to a trio collaborating over long distance, following their brief expansion.

From the album’s opener, lead single Flower of Sex, it’s clear that Merchandise’s 1980s influences have returned with a vengeance. Carson Cox’s soulful baritone calls over anthemic, effects-laden guitar lines and cavernous kick drums.

All the songs here are stadium-sized, but Merchandise occasionally play with their established formula – such as in the mysterious electro thump of Right Back To The Start, Disintegration-esque highlight Shadow Of The Truth, and I Will Not Sleep Here’s joyous acoustic strum. A Corpse Wired For Sound meanders a little too much at times, with every track stretching beyond the four minute mark, but overall it feels a successful rebirth which won't fail to engage live audiences.
