MC Lars - This Gigantic Robot Kills

Album Review by Gordon Bruce | 24 Apr 2009
Album title: This Gigantic Robot Kills
Artist: MC Lars
Label: Crappy Records
Release date: 20 Apr

MC Lars has returned with his trademark nerdcore, or, in his own words, “post-punk laptop rap”. He's certainly got his full geek on for This Gigantic Robot Kills. Nowhere else will you hear lyrics like “it’s my self-referential introduction song” as Wheatus and Weird Al intermingle in the background. Though Lars’ subjects don’t extend to anything wildly profound, it’s curiously refreshing to hear songs about dirty houses (“last time it took half an hour/to figure how to work his upstairs shower”) and the most annoying thing to blight this planet: people who think they can play guitar because they own Guitar Hero (“check out his calloused guitar button blisters!”). While the world may not necessarily need another Weird Al, there's every chance it can squeeze in a rival to the curly-haired maniac - so long as you don’t expect the music to stand out beyond the comedy. An enjoyable 45 minutes.
