Manda Rin - My D.N.A

If you're nostalgic for a bit of the cartoon party pop that was tame enough for your high school disco then this album should surely help

Album title: My D.N.A
Artist: Manda Rin
Label: This is Fake DIY
Release date: 8 Sep

Manda Rin is the awffy wee weegie lady who sang with cult 90s disco-punk puppies Bis, later continuing with its members in Data Panik, and she's happening to our ears all over again with her first solo album, titled My D.N.A. Sounding as Powerpuff Girl as ever and backed by layers of squeaky clean guitar, pop-crazed synth and digitised no-frills beats, it seems pretty safe to assume Manda may well wonder where the last decade and a bit went since the height of Bis’s buzz. If you're nostalgic for a bit of the cartoon party pop that was tame enough for your high school disco then My D.N.A should surely help, but the sum of what's on offer is a little too kitsch and cutesy. Despite its high energy - and although there's clearly some kindred spirit between Manda and acts like CSS and The Knife - this is just too dated at times and it's difficult to imagine where this record might find a niche today because of it. Manda Rin plays King Tut's, Glasgow with Miss the Occupier on 28 Aug and with Fangs at The Barfly, Glasgow on 11 Sep.
