Klak Tik – Must We Find a Winner

Album Review by Chris Buckle | 02 Jun 2010
Album title: Must We Find A Winner
Artist: Klak Tik
Label: Safety First
Release date: 14 Jun

When musicians cite ‘musical differences’ for parting company, assumptions of petty arguments abound. Though not privy to the reasons behind 6 Day Riot co-founders Tamara Schlesinger and Soren Bonke severing their songwriting ties, it seems that rarity: a genuine, non-euphemistic clash of creativities.

Where Schlesinger kept the Riot moniker to peddle charming, upbeat pop, Bonke’s re-emergence as Klak Tik is a more sombre affair. It quietly impresses initially, but listening to fifty-eight minutes of his slow, worthy compositions is like eating your way through a sack of potatoes mashed with a teaspoon: lovely in small doses – and evidently the product of great effort – but bloating and dull. Musically, Elbow are a fair comparison, but Asleep At The Back managed the hour-long debut more deftly. Must We Find A Winner is comparatively dreary – and if we absolutely must declare a victor, Bonke’s former band stands higher on the podium. [Chris Buckle]
