Fabric 45 - Omar S: Detroit

Album Review by Emma Kilday | 09 Mar 2009
Album title: Fabric 45 – Omar S: Detroit
Artist: Omar S
Label: Fabric Recordings
Release date: 16 Mar

Artists often use Fabric compilations to showcase their more obscure musical favourites and the track-listings read like a “who’s who” of up-and-coming music. This album breaks the mould by being entirely made up of Omar’s own tracks, but far from being self-indulgent, the album is brilliantly varied with every track retaining his signature sound without becoming monotonous. It is unsurprising that Omar's output is so versatile, as he has such a wide range of influences; Deroit techno, a sound he makes his own on Blade Runner; Motown and Chicago house, evident on the classic-in-the-making Set it Out; and even video games, surely the reason Polycopter and Strider’s World have a sound that verges on chiptune. Omar runs his own FXHE imprint from his hometown of Detroit and this marks the first time his productions will be released on another label. Hopefully this step will help the relative unknown achieve the recognition he deserves.
