Big Ned - Big Ned
Oozing out of the stereo like a Scottish version of Danzig, Big Ned positively revel in the fact that the Devil's playground is not exclusively in the Middle East, nor does the Dark One spend all his time hanging around at crossroads in the American Deep South. Rather, the De'il is alive and well in Glasgow, and is cheerfully encouraging the natives to show how sex, drugs, and rock n' roll are really done. Big Ned however join an esteemed lineage of Scottish musicians - including Aidan Moffat and Sluts of Trust - who know that real depravity is often toasted wth a bottle of Buckfast. To this end, they channel the lyricism of Nick Cave through a psychosexual Lynchian nightmare, though a peculiar Glaswegian hard edge bolsters their apocalyptic sleaze-rock musings. But unlike Cave, there is no redemption sought beneath the excess.
Big Ned plays Optimo at Sub Club, Glasgow on 5 April.
