Bear in Heaven – Beast Rest Forth Mouth: Remixed

 

Following on from its UK release this May, the Brooklyn disco hipsters latest album Beast Rest Forth Mouth became the party album of the summer, albeit the kind of party with a no moustache, no entry door policy. As with any remix album, familiarity with the source material can be a double-edged sword. Just as often as you lament the drowning of a great song beneath waves of heavy-handed dancefloor synth and reverb – as with Pink Skull's take on Wholehearted Mess – you celebrate the liberation of a tune that was all too hidden in the original take; a reappraisal of You Do You by Studio mines the original’s space-rock psychedelic to uncover a gem of Miami Vice-flavoured funk. This hit-and-miss collection, exclusive to our shores, doesn’t have quite the same depth as its Pitchfork-praised predecessor, but as a curio it’s well worthy of a listen. [Oisín Kealy]
