Bass Clef - May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way

Album Review by Rosie Davies | 26 Jan 2010
Album title: May The Bridges I Burn Light The Way
Artist: Bass Clef
Label: Blank Tapes
Release date: 15 Feb

As the title suggests, the three year wait for dubstep prodigy Ralph Cumbers – AKA Bass Clef – to serve up his second album has been partly due to a series of chaotic events in his life, or so he suggests on his blog. The result is testament to the fact that negative life experiences – mainly love's many traumas, judging by these song titles –can encourage the most beautiful creativity. His theramin-cowbell-trombone trademark is still the defining sound, albeit fused with found sounds. African drum beats, Caribbean carnival and Brazilian tango rhythms clash with the sounds of his resident East London streets, eventually sliding into experimental orchestral soundscapes and expansive, dark clouds of electronic sound. It's the heavy doses of grimy dubstep and blasts of garage that provide the meat – Heartbroken Soca Cascade, Night on Mare Street and Kiss Me are so addictively bass-heavy and danceable that you can't help but forget about the heartbreak and raise your wrists to the sky.
