The soundtrack to an '80s Italian sci-fi flick that never was, Shadow of the Blood Stained Kiss is a fantastic example of retrofuturism: taking pleasure in what people of the past thought the future was going to sound like. Travel back to 1983 and indulge your ears: Witchcraft is robot disco, and The Return is pure rave - that’s proper, pilled-up-in-a-Somerset-barn rave, mind. Interstellar Space Exploration sounds like Jean Michel Jarre filling in on keyboard for New Order, and Velocity Central is surely the background music to some long-forgotten motorway informercial of the decade. This LP is rendered all the groovier for its datedness, and therein lies the appeal of Shadow of the Blood Stained Kiss: it may be firmly placed within the inverted commas of irony, but it's irresistible nonetheless, as best exemplified on the pounding-yet-camp standout Future Space Love Party. So find a disused modernist car park, turn up your boombox, and enjoy.
