Kris Drever - Mark The Hard Earth

3/5 stars
Album review by Ryan Drever.
Published 02 March 2010

Mark The Hard Earth is the second solo effort from Kris Drever - Orcadian folk guitarist and one third of award-winning Scottish trio, LAU. With appearances from a variety of folk/traditional instrumentalists scattered throughout its 11 tracks - from the somewhat legendary Phil Cunningham on squeeze box and frequent collaborator John McCusker on fiddle duties, to the some truly magical backing vocals from singers Heidi Talbot and Karine Polwart - this record isn't afraid to show its roots, often sounding like it could quite comfortably come pumping out of a kilt shop. On the other hand, tracks like the lulling Crown Of London and the standout Allegory with its flecks of darkness and marching rhythms take occasional, though rather slight detours from a rather prominent traditional Scottish folk template. However, whatever the direction may be, Mark the Hard Earth is ultimately carried by Drever's voice; one of undeniable maturity and depth. [Ryan Drever]
