Ocean Colour Scene - Saturday

2/5 stars
Album review by Chris Buckle.
Published 18 January 2010

“Hundred mile high city” croaks Ocean Colour Scene’s Simon Fowler seconds into ninth album Saturday, delivering a message interpretable two ways. One: “as far as we’re concerned, this album is up there with The Ones People Know. New fans may be scarce, but those who’ve doggedly stuck with us, loyally ingesting every bland addition to our catalogue of lager-stained ‘anthems’ and wobbly-voiced ballads will love this, because they recognise top quality song-writing – Real Music, if you will – when they hear it. We aren’t scared to quote our past. We are as proud of Saturday as we were of Marchin’ Already.” Two: “our inspiration died years ago. Saturday achieves the odd triumph, but, let’s be honest, things aren’t exactly progressing. So we’ll foreground the stagnation, because on its own terms, this album ain't that bad – a bit dull, it’s true, but generally accomplished and tuneful.”  Your pick. [Chris Buckle]

  • first negitive review I seen about this album, tar for the heads up, though I feel this review is more based on the fact you don't like the band, then it is about the record.

  • How on earth is this a review of the album? Pathetic "review" by Chris Buckle.

  • Did you even listen to the album?

Seems to me all you've done is lift a couple of OCS quotes and mutter on that the band, rightly, are still on the go. I doth my cap to you, sir.

How's about you have a wee listen to the album and try again. Maybe sometime after your tenth birthday, when you can use big boy words, huh?

  • this album is the dead horse. ocs are flogging it. what a great word: flogging. its embarrassing to see this band are still dragging their saggy asses around the country. "and you're not on the scene, you're not so cool" to quote a band so past it, they make my gran look cool. and she's dead.

  • However dull you think the album is, I can gurantee everyone reading this post, that it is nowehere near as dull and pointless as this 'review'

  • So far so good. Calling the band average, normal, boring or ordinary seems extremely harsh and I certainly wouldn’t use any of these words to describe the album. Similarly I couldn’t realistically describe the album as being mind blowing. It certainly doesn’t deserve to have a ladle of my steaming hot scorn poured all over it, whilst showering it in sycophancy seems a little unjustified.
