Experience of working on theatre productions has imbued their music with a definite soundtrack-like quality

Achieving both critical and popular acclaim in Europe and Canada with previous albums, This Illusion Sound and On Black Sea, Glasgow-duo Pomegranate look to re-establish themselves closer to home with third release, The Thrill of Fresh Paint.

Composer and producer Stef McGlinchey and vocalist Vanessa Rigg met in the mid-Nineties whilst working on forward-thinking theatre productions which seems to have imbued their music with a definite soundtrack-like quality, particularly apparent on the winter-scene conjuring High Mountain Snow.

Elsewhere, there's a childlike innocence to the lyrics of Red Bricks, the meeting of electronica and pop on Beauty and Pity, with other tracks making more use of guitar, combining with Rigg's vocal charms in a manner reminiscent of early-Nineties, shoe-gazing indie.

Overall, it's pleasant enough, the likelihood being that most tracks will be slow-burners that will reward the repeat listener. [Colin Chapman]
