David Karsten Daniels - Sharp Teeth

A richly orchestrated tapestry played out by 19 musicians carrying as many instruments

Album title: Sharp Teeth
Artist: David Karsten Daniels
Label: Fatcat

When hearing folk-influenced Americana so deliciously contrary as David Karsten Daniels' Sharp Teeth, there's an occasional propensity to draw complementary comparisons to Modest Mouse. In the case of David Karsten Daniels, however, the comparison is just not enough to describe how potent and ambitious his songs actually are. Ranging from the jazz influences of 'American Pastime' to the noise freakouts of 'Beast' to deathly slow and haunting piano dirges, the album is a richly orchestrated tapestry played out by 19 musicians carrying as many instruments and tied together by those old Southern folk traditions. Ultimately compelling and beautiful, Sharp Teeth could prove an early contender for album of the year. [Neil Ferguson]
