Cornershop – Urban Turban

Album Review by Chris McCall | 09 May 2012
Album title: Urban Turban
Artist: Cornershop
Label: Ample Play
Release date: 28 May

Cornershop have been releasing records for more than 20 years but are still bizarrely viewed in some quarters as one-hit-wonders. It's an entirely undeserved label given the extraordinary diversity and continuing quality of their music.

Urban Turban is a delight – all the Cornershop hallmarks are here; Punjabi folk and good humour on Inspector Bamba Singh's Lament; the laidback sunshine rock of Something Makes You Feel Like and the playful sing-a-long of What Did The Hippie Have In His Bag? Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayers can sample almost any style and still make it their own.

It’s a mixed bag that will please long-term fans and puzzle others, but Cornershop are never wilfully obscure. Their eagerness to collaborate – with a different artist on each of the album's 11 tracks – proves their broadminded approach to making music, but it never dilutes the singular sound of one of the UK's most multifarious bands.
