Those Darlins – Screws Get Loose

3/5 stars

Almost a full year since it was first released across the pond, Screws Get Loose has finally washed up on these shores. A quartet from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Those Darlins might be an unfamiliar name to some but they've built a small but growing fan base in the UK these past three years, largely thanks to the ever-popular rockabilly-meets-Ramones style of guitar pop that they specialise in.

Think Dum Dum Girls but sung in a southern drawl with added attitude, and you're half way there. Starting life as an all-girl trio, Those Darlins took the radical step of adding a drummer when recording their second album, and the result is a more coherent effort than their ramshackle debut. There's enough southern slacker charm on offer to offset the often repetitive nature of their garage rock strumming, and their sweet nasal melodies ensure this is a record that has certainly been worth the wait.
