Album title: Edward EP (First Songs)

Emmy the Great revisits her juvenilia (well, perhaps juvenilia is a bit much…she’s only 25), and it’s a chance to witness her ingénue charm at its most intimate. As per usual, it’s a mix of honesty and self-awareness, with Canopies and Drapes almost qualifying to play over one of those moody montage scenes in One Tree Hill, if it wasn’t a hilariously accurate dissection of that very kind of melodramatic teen lurvve. On Bowl Collecting Blood, her voice trembles its way around Burt Bacharach-style melodies and imagery like “you threw him out the cold like the hair coming out of a bush”. These beautiful flashes of early talent cement the fact that possible to listen to this girl without falling in love.
