Moby - Wait For Me

Album Review by Ray Philp | 26 May 2009
Album title: Wait For Me
Artist: Moby
Label: Little Idiot Records
Release date: 29 Jun

If Last Night, Moby’s previous album, was an abbreviated eulogy to New York nightlife, then he evidently had too good a time of it. Wait For Me is the sniffling, teary-eyed hangover of a career arguably littered with instances of schadenfreude and, perhaps, regret. Self-loathing is rarely this naked; the mournful blues guitar of Mistake is punctuated by a rare vocal outing from Moby (“don’t let me make the same mistake again/please, don’t let me make the same mistake again”), and just when you’re wondering where all the house refrains have gone, Hope Is Gone, Isolate, and Shot In The Back Of The Head cheerfully queue up to reinforce the melancholy. Fortunately, Wait For Me’s neurosis remains rooted in whimsy, and is thus fleshed out with an enriching palate of minor keys and blues motifs. If only hangovers were always this rewarding.
