The goth / cyberpunk / future pop / coldwave scene has always existed in a complete vacuum where the Pet Shop Boys still sound futuristic and social worth is judged on how long your neon fake dreadlock extensions are. And it’s really only in such an isolated bubble that a band such as Xykogen could be considered anything other than a novelty act. Over colourless techno with a few customary stock “industrial” samples, various insipid vocalists, half-wishing they were David Bowie, mumble some of the most outlandishly conceited drivel since William Topaz MacGonagall, without even the slightest inkling of wit or intellect that might alleviate the lyrical nonsense to something at least tantalising. But then the cybergoth scene is not accustomed to critical thought, and Xykogn have got the look and the misplaced and ignorant pretentiousness that will see them playing gothic festivals for a while yet.
