Love Is All - A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night

Album Review by Heather Crumley | 30 Mar 2009
Album title: A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night
Artist: Love Is All
Label: What's Your Rupture?
Release date: 23 Mar

Your enjoyment of A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night will depend largely on your tolerance of Josephine Olausson’s vocals. Love Is All’s jagged indie-pop is perfectly pleasant, but when Olausson unleashes her child-like yelp on opener New Beginnings, fighting the instinct to hit stop requires real effort. However, the appeal of her vocals increases as the album progresses, the ever-so-slightly off-key abandon she brings to Wishing Well and the unexpected sweetness of When Giants Fall proving both endearing and exciting. There are still some irritating moments: Movie Romance grates, and A More Uncertain Future, a duet with guitarist Nicholaus Sparding, tries to be a heartfelt tale of a relationship breaking down but succeeds only in unearthing the memory of that song Space and Cerys Matthews sang about Tom Jones (cheers). Maybe there’s nothing earth-shattering going on, but it’s a lot of fun, and acquiring a taste for that voice is worth it. Honest.
