CSS - Donkey

Album Review by Darren Carle | 21 Jul 2008
Album title: Donkey
Artist: CSS
Label: Sub Pop
Release date: 21 Jul

Despite debut album Cansei de Ser Sexy becoming something of a ‘soundtrack to the summer’ last year, the resultant slew of mediocre gigs, festival slots and TV appearances suggested that the bolts of the CSS electro-pop fun ride were already pranging off at an alarming rate. Initially then, Donkey starts off as a promising restoration project with Jager Yoga’s fist-clenching declaration; “We didn’t come into the world to walk around, we came here to take you out!” Although it’s not long before Reggae All Night body-pops into an 80s disco night to find the scenesters have already de-camped elsewhere. However, tracks like Move re-install their trademark sassiness, though singer Lovefoxxx is somewhat sparse with her ‘rude-isms’ these days. At times things seem as formulaic as a Big Mac, but on balance the Brazilian sex troupe still seem able to serve up a dollop of spicy sauce with that cheese. [Darren Carle]
