Glyder - Playground for Life

I dare any skeptic of the genre not to grin as one guitar squeals while the other frantically tries to run out of frets

Album title: Playground for Life
Artist: Glyder
Label: Townsend
Irish rockers Glyder make no attempt to break the boundaries of melodic metal with their second album Playground for Life, but they do work the tried and tested formula pretty well. The licks are catchy and range from the downright crunchy to Darkness-esque cheesy: I dare any skeptic of the genre not to grin as one guitar squeals while the other frantically tries to run out of frets. Tony Cullen's vocals occasionally let the band down though, gliding blandly on the energy of guitars, bass and drums without injecting their own fire. The exception to this criticism is the strong point of the album: the drunken drawl on Gambler's Blues is the perfect atmospheric opener. Unfortunately, the other songs don't quite fulfill their potential, with the half-hearted singing at the epic climax of Sleeping Gun making the song's title metaphor perfect for the band playing it - not a good thing in this line of music.
