St. Vincent - Marry Me

A bold curveball of an album.

Album Review by Hamza K | 07 Nov 2007
Album title: Marry Me
Artist: St. Vincent
Label: Beggars Banquet
St.Vincent's Annie Clark comes from a long line of soft-core emo mumblers and spent the last few years playing guitar for Sufjan Stevens and The Polyphonic Spree. And while the indie scene is full of forgettable acts emulating Mr. Stevens, Clark wisely decides to strike out on her own with Marry Me, a bold curveball of an album. The lilting melody of the title track finds Clark singing "I'm as fickle as a paper doll being kicked by the wind / When I touch down again I'll be in someone else's arms," but as her romances shift so does her sound; there's nothing sweet about the grungy guitar on Your Lips Are Red and the marching beat of Paris is Burning. Innovation fuels the album, and while many bands focus on one sound and so lack their own, Clark embraces the mela to find a voice distinctly hers. (Hamza K)
