Motion City Soundtrack - Even If It Kills Me

Up-tempo melodies flow from the opening bars of the first track.

Album title: Even If It Kills Me
Artist: Motion City Soundtrack
Label: Epitaph
There are two ways to follow a bestselling indie punk rock album: one - pander to the masses, become completely pop, suck (The Offspring route). Two - keep the best parts of your older work, improve all else, rule the world (The Blink 182 route). With Even If It Kills Me, Motion City Soundtrack have succeeded in the latter. Up-tempo melodies flow from the opening bars of the first track to last call at the downtown bars where band members spend all their time. Singer Justin Pierre overcame personal demons and addictions to write mature lyrics that still retain his wry sense of humour. He understands the need for salvation, but hopes he's saved by Autobots and acrobats. With their first two albums, MCS were bright players in a crowded scene. But with their third, and best, they've stolen the show. What they do next should be closely followed: after all, the kids who pop today will rock tomorrow. (Hamza K)
