DJ Food & DK - Now, Listen Again!

The beauty of it is the complexity of arrangement - each time you hear something new, a sound clip, a new instrument, an extra beat: it constantly evolves with each listen

Album title: Now, Listen Again!
Artist: DJ Food & DK
Label: Solid Steel/Ninja Tune
This is not a contemporary mix, DJ Food & DK have put time and thought into plowing their already amassed collection (a result of over 20 years of muso tendencies), and selecting those records that always sounded good together when mixed live: it's an album that has been pieced together over six years, and the work put into it is clearly evident. It's a five star journey through genres from start to finish, making its way through Timbaland to Pepe Deluxe, onto Primal Scream, and then a d&b onslaught from the likes of Pendulum, culminating in the Are You Being Served? Theme tune! A mix of funk, hip hop, psychedelia, electronica, house, soul, and more - too much to condense into a review. It's cut and paste, mashup and some of the smoothest mixing you'll ever hear, with a few rare finds thrown in, but the beauty of it is the complexity of arrangement - each time you hear something new, a sound clip, a new instrument, an extra beat: it constantly evolves with each listen. The fitting Food For My Soul by 60s surf-psych outfit The Dragons, closes the album, expressing feel-good ideas over ageless sounds. The song also marks a new beginning for Ninja Tune, a deal has now been made to put out The Dragons' unreleased material from the same period later this year for a surf-psych revival. [Alex Burden]
