Darsombra – Climax Community
“Audiovisual” duo Brian Daniloski and Ann Everton cram in early Earth worship, swelling ambience and disturbing vocal chants into Roaming the Periphery, the 23-minute opener to Climax Community, their first studio effort for Exile on Mainstream.
Some sections clash rather than wash together as they should – Green, a brief and frustratingly minimal acoustic passage unnecessarily divides the other two individually compelling aural experiences – but when Daniloski's loops and grooves settle into one mood for an extended period, the results are often satisfyingly blissful.
Though the simplistic riffing, psychedelic soloing and low-end bass throbs on Thunder Thighs should prove to be tiresome, they somehow manage to come together to lull and soothe. The music is intended to be paired up with Everton's trippy visuals, so there's the notion that all of this might work better in a live setting, but there's still enough aural bite in these recordings to give drone disciples their kicks.
