Los Angeles has never been more protean in dance circles than it is right now and here is Teebs to make the most of the scene's 'Seattle moment'. A collaborator of the mighty Flying Lotus, Teebs (real name Mtendere Madowa) is less angular and jazz-inflected than Fly Lo but still packs a lot of music into his debut. It's vocal-free aside from a beautiful hook up with Gaby Hernandez on Long Distance and overall the mood is autumnal in the best way, slow-burning, sensual and smoky.

Teebs came out of visual art and although it's an easy cliché, his music does have painterly aspects to it; attention is paid to composition, tracks grab and hold the attention though their brief running time and there is a pleasing abstract feel throughout. Let's run the analogy off the road by saying that Teebs says a lot while keeping everything within the frame. [David McNally]
